| Post subject: | power steering pump pulley alignment |
I am changing my 84 pickup to power steering, and am having trouble figuring out why NONE of the 12 or so power steering pump pulleys I looked at this morning at the salvage yard didn't line up with the crank pulleys, most had belts still on em, so I am guessing this is normal?(the steering pump pulley is on an angle and rearwards of the crank pulley) It just looks like there is no way a belt would ever stay on there. When I installed the setup I pulled off another similar year truck, It looked like I had done something wrong. If there is a fix for this, I would like to know about it!! Thanks, Bill |

Which crank pulley are you trying to line up with? The factory setup uses a sheetmetal pulley that bolts onto the front of the vibration damper. A similar bolt-on pulley is used on the back of the damper (engine side) to drive the A/C compressor if so equipped. |

I have the sheet metal one on the front of the dampener, and the steering pump pulley is almost a half pulley off (alignment wise) with the one attached to the dampner. and the dampner is all the way on the crank, compared to the other ones I looked at... |

Oh, OK, I get what you're saying, now. Y'know, I've never really been super keen on most of the accessory belt drive setups (=belt routing and bracketry arrangements) the factory used on the \6. They seem poorly thought out and difficult to make work completely satisfactorily. I know the '60s versions of that P/S setup tended to run with less offset/less angle than you're seeing in the later trucks, but I also know it was really tough to keep belts tensioned and quiet in them. I'm guessing the added offset and angle was an effort to provide some preload in the system. Anyhow, none of the belt drive problems are serious enough to cause the slant to be known for throwing belts, so I wouldn't worry too hard about it. |

Ok, thanks Dan, I have figured that if it doesn't keep a belt on, I will slot the bolt holes on the bracket where it bolts to the block, all I can come up with, still just can't figger why none of the other ones did line up either....guess it is an engineer thing... Thanks again, Bill |

Hi Bill, I had the same problem as well. I sloted / elongated the mounting holes on the bracket and had no problem of lining up the pulleys. Once the bracket is tightened to the block, set the tension on the belt. Good luck! |

Thanks for all your help, I got it all put together, and it worked fine, but made more belt noise than I cared for, so I slotted the bolt holes, and now it runs much quieter!! Thanks again, Bill |

yeah, my '82 doesn't line up square and the belt always comes loose. I always figured it was because the PO abused it, but maybe it's a known problem... |
