Reed, I think the Slant 727 started around '72. Before that they had the adapter plates for the small block 727. There should be a number stamped on a pad around the pan rail somewhere. You can decode it from that.

Okay, on Monday my brother's van will be dropped off at my house so I can rebuild the transmission on it and do some other things (like re-degree the cam, curve the distributor, do a tune-up, brake work, adjsut valves, etc...) Here is my question. About five years ago we installed a rebuilt Slant Six 727. The transmission has failed twice since them, both times the repair shops tweaked it so it worked for a couple months before failing. I am going to pull the transmission and either rebuild it myself or buy another slant six 727 to rebuild and replace the one currently on the van. I have been looking at purchasing rebuild kits for 727s, but I need to know if the transmission is pre or post 1972. I don't have a clue what this transmission originally came in. I think the slant six 727 had been phased out by 72, but how can I tell for sure what year this transmission was made? Also, since this transmission will be going back into a van, what can I do to the internals of the transmission for better fuel economy, durability, and operation? Not looking for racing performance, just gas mileage and reliability. It already has the MP deep sump transmission pan. Is a shift kit worth it? What about adjusting the line pressure and bands etc...? Thanks for any tips you can offer! |

I am just throwing this out there, as an idea... Wouldn´t more clutches mean you could run less pressure, for the same power handling? It should take less power to run with a lower pressure, right? Or am I just rambling again??? It is early, kinda... |

Probably. I am fairly confident that the transmission that is in my brother's van right now is beyond hope, and to keep things simple I want to just swap it with an identical unit. Does yours have a torque converter? |

theres been a '82 slant 727 (with lockup)on Ebay lately somewhere south of me here in IL that is like 90% rebuilt by a dealer tech, just needs the front band and 1 other thing put back in, seller bailed on it B4 his buddy finished the trans and put in a 360. (imagine that) At least that's what the description said. Its been listed a couple times now, for like $15.00. Don't know what shipping would be. The name of the town sorta rings a bell, I believe its in the Champaign area which is just over an hour south of me. I even thought of snagging it even though my current project is gonna be a stick. |

Thanks, but shipping would cost alot. I would rather buy Erics and rebuild it myself anyway (I just don't trust a stranger's work). |
