what are some things that can be done to improve highway mileage and driveability in a 71 slant with an A904 tranny (stock 7 1/4 rearend gears, maybe like 2.92 or something like that, not too sure, but they ain't real low):
the only thing i can think of is maybe a locking torque converter, but i may be wrong...
give me some ideas
i got a bunch of trips to make out to Tennessee

The best way to improve highway mileage? Keep your foot off the gas. I know it's hard, but it makes a /huge/ difference. When I drive, I get around 13-14 mpg. When my dad drives, he'll average 17-18. I don't commute every day or anything, so I don't really care about the gas mileage. Keep it around 55, take the slow lane and chug up the hills, and you may be amazed at the difference.
