Can someone tell me the idle speed and timing spec.s for a federal 1975 Dart, automatic, 225 - 1brl., with PS and AC. My Haynes book says "check the engine compartment stickers" for the settings. thns |

Unless it's gone, the sticker on the driver's side fender should say: RG engine family...blah blah 0.5% CO @ some spec Initial timing =TDC Idle = 750 rpm... Generic Chilton's would say TDC initial and 750 rpm idle, I can't remember what year they started the 'add propane' to help set idle procedure. -D.Idiot |

-D.Idiot 1975............. I've always just used the lean drop method on those instead.............. (adjust mixture for best idle, then lean it out until it drops 50 rpm) |

I tried TDC on my slant when I first got it.....What a dog! Give your engine some advance. It will thank you for it. |

If he's emissions testing he'll need to set it at that level per factory spec. If he's eventually doing a 'power tune-up', he'll want a different distributor with a better governor...the spec he has @ TDC usually has a mech governor of 15L/R....so if he dials in the 1976 spec of '10-12 BTDC' initial...the timing will ping when it get up past to 20 deg. of adv. on the crank. If he buys the later distributor with the limited governor and gave it more initial, he'd be in the 'safe' zone. The slant does like a fair amount of initial/advance as this builds cylinder pressure sooner on such a low compression engine... I'd say tune it up to specs first, drive it, make sure it's all running fine...then he can start playing with it little at a time to see how it's running. I think his car should have a nice dead cat. convertor in the pipe unless it 'fell off' while going over a speed bump... -D.Idiot |
