Just for clarification purposes: I assume that a slant six has an "even fire" distributor, though admittedly I have no idea what an "odd fire" distributor is. Is my assumption correct? thanks, josh

Even fire yes. Some gm 6's the crankshaft rotation varies from cylinder to cylinder in relation to the spark. A slant will fire a plug every 120 degrees of rotation. The odd fire is something like 118 and 110. I could be way off on the gm #s i haven't played with one in years.

The Chrysler 3.9 V-6 has a odd fire distributor. Some say this is the reason that the 3.9 likes timing chains so much.

so are you saying that since the slant has a even fire, is one thing more reliable about it compared to odd fire engines?

Being an inline rather than a V style engine says a lot about durability by itself. The inline engines all seem torquier than teh V's. But yeah, an even fire engine will run smoother for sure, and I can see a durability advantages too. An even fire 6 cyl, fires every 120* of crank rotation. An odd fire, like the 3.9 that replaced the slant, fires at 112, then 128, then 112,then 128 then 112 again and then 128. The differing gaps between the firing order gives a rougher running engine than an even fire. thats why Dakotas all have that little "miss" when idling.
