I was looking around to see if this had already been answered, but I didn't see it.
what cam grind would you use for an offy dual carb?
My first thought was a stock 2bbl would work, So I dropped by my machinists today and he was telling me about an asymetrical(?) profile used in inline 6cyl engine cams where the base line is for 2 and 5, 1 and 6 get more than the base lift, and 3 and 4 get less than the base lift.
What do you guys think? Who has the numbers on this?
Sounds amazing to me, just want to know how much I can expect to pay for a cam like this...

Before you get all huffy about that, I think I'd talk to Doc's cam grinder Elgin Cams... if I were to do my rebuild over again, I'd pull for Doc's dual pattern cam it looked really nice for moderate builds (but with street manners). Not sure their prices but most cam companies who run a custom grind for you will be $250-300 and more if it's a headache (or $1000 if a roller cam for an engine that isn't normally rollerized).

You also just can't match the cam to the intake, the other variables that need to be addressed are 'street/vs/strip', compression ratio, what are you doing to the head(porting, HP springs?, OS valves?), automatic tranny with street gears...O/D with 4.56's????

more info helps make and info decision...you may be in 'never done that before land' and have to try something and see if it works...

yeah, it just supposed to be a bomber with a little 'gettup'. I'm (trying to) not going crazy over this, (or with this engine,) but I love the technical aspects of engine operation and its easy for me to get over-zealous in my desire to implement the science.
I actually got way more information than I wanted from my machinist. And what I want and what I need are actually different. All I need is a cam that'll work well with a stock head, dual carbs, a slightly modified 904 and freeway gears (ratio yet indeterminate).

Thanks for getting at least one of my feet closer to the 'brake' pedal....

Post subject:  Have chosen yet?

You don't need to totally slow down...but, say you run a nice 3.23 gear with the automatic...stock head, springs, valves...have the machinist do a gasket match on the ports, and make your compression ratio about 9.2:1.

You can still get good manners, good gas mileage, and a fair bit of 'fun' factor out of that with a short overlap cam, fair lift and a lower duration (if it was 11:1 compression...lots of duration and overlap to bleed some of that pressure out would be the key...)...

In your case a '250-260' cam would be ok if all of the above were 'in-sync'.

Doc had posted a couple of custom cams a while back and when I get the FDX done, or a 'spare' driver I'll probably deep six my comp cam 252 and try one of his better recipes:

1) 256/256/32 .470 111 CL

2)260/268/42 .434/.429 111CL

The MP 243 would be OK as a 'stock cam', but with your intake and if the compression and timing was dialed in right, I could see a bit more cam (I know mine would like some more...)

Do you have some concrete 'specs' so a few more guys can 'jump in' and maybe give you a better 'guess'?

I think if a cam grinder told me this, I'd look around for a different one who wasn't smoking drugs.

Sounds like a case for the MP 244° cam, which MP have discontinued but which Elgin Cams now sells (I sent Doug my last new-in-box example and he had Elgin "pattern" it, so they can now crank out copies.

I really like this cam in my '62, which is built up to a similar level that you're describing for your '52.

What are the exact numbers on this cam?
Did Elgin set up a part number for this cam? If I call them, and ask for the MP244, for a slant six, would they know what I was talking about? I'm at the "I need a cam before I can go any further" stage of the engine build.

Thanks
