hey there i would appreciate any help on this one.

when i purchased the car about 3 month back all the electrics were working no problems. heres the dumb stuff i did

tried to wire up the alternator turns out its completely the wrong type and the green wire started smoking at the alternator and at the regulator. seems as if the damage was isolated to there but i did notice some smoke coming out from under the dash. disaster number one.

then in my efforts to check behind the instumnet pannel i shorted the printed circuit along the top. thats alright though cause i have a whole car to use as spares. so in with the new instument pannel. that suits me cause the speedo in the old one was dancing around. hooked the whole thing up and realise...

da da da....no window wipers working. have checked the wiring in my book and am sure it is wired properly. hooked the wiper motor up to the battery works fine. (note was not working on the old panel either)

then no idicators they were working fine before (front only) check the bulbs they look fine. no instrument lights either. except the oil light. fuel and amp gauge working fine too.

checked the flasher unit no clicking (is there any way to check this)
checked the fuse panel too no fuses blown there.

questions

could the regulator need replacing what does that thing do any way.

is there some fuse i am missing. i am aware of the fusable link from the ammeter but i cant seem to find it.

what kind of fault would cause these two faults in tandem?

does anyone have any ideas suggestions.

i am close to getting this on the road.

When starting from zero, you cannot just guess your way through car repair. If you try, the results will be as you describe: Electrical fires, burned-out parts, and a general trail of destruction.

I don't mean to sound harsh, but the reality is that unless you stop trying to work on the car without a proper service manual that you have read and understood, you are going to keep doing damage to your car. Solutions to problem of this magnitude really cannot be spoon-fed.

well i have been working on cars for 5 years now.

only the electrical stuff stumps me. i guess if you have a passion or hobby you will just do it no matter what.

you should apprecate however that once you start working on cars its hard to stop. i love projects and love seeing things come together.

i do have a manual, however it does not tell you what everthing does only how to pull it out and put it back together.

theis latest mishap is unfortunate. but i will learn from it and become wiser for the effort. so if you have any wise words then speak now.

ps got the dash lights working. still cant find the fuseable link its seems to me hiding somewhere

Unless it's a light bulb or checking the fuses, I won't touch the electrical without a wiring diagram...........

funny thing is i ahve the diagram he he

well here we go

looks like this problem is too big for the slant boys guess i will fix it myself.

well heres the update...

in my endeavor to find the fuseable link i found a big blow out in the wiring loom behind the dash it was hidden the whole time.

looks like the big black wire just exploded itself when i hooked up the bogus alternator. it took out a about four other wires.

now i have to reconnect them

hmm

should i connect them and solder them or should i use a connector thing with screws.

i think the solder thing is the way then i will insulate them all seperate.

anyone?

ps the fuseable link was connected straight to the starter relay it was a short wire withe a ring at one end. does that sound alright?

The problem is not "too big for the slant boys." You have it all in fornt of you all anyone else can do is try to interpret and fill in between the lines... big difference.

You should solder the wires and insulate them with heat shrink tubing. Be sure to put the tubing on first.

The only thing "too big for the slant boys" with your car's problem is the ego on the nut behind the wheel. :roll:
