Post subject:  1965 poly gold paint-- Was it metallic?

Hi all,

After following this thread http://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/sho ... &fpart=all

I am trying to find out what Poly Gold looked like in 1965. The paint code was AA1, if that helps. It seems like a light colored gold, and I am not sure if it was really metallic, in the modern sense of the word. I am not necessarily going to repaint it exactly the same, but I would like to know where I am starting from.

Also, I have a gold vinyl interior. What other interior colors were possible with the poly gold paint?

Thanks,

Greg

I would expect it to be metalic just like the interior gold is a light metalic.

Yep, the gold is metallic ("Poly" means "polychromatic", which meant "metallic").

Thanks. That is what I was afraid of. If I want the interior to match the exterior, I am not able to consider the "roll on" approach, and I need to go with a pricy spray job, to get the metallic look.

You could always mix some metalic pigment into the tremclad and still roll it on. Word of warning about gold met it is one of the most frustrating colors to spray in a single stage paint. It has a bad tendancy to tiger strip the metalic. Base clear is almost a must for a good gold paint job.

Hmmm .... tiger stripe gold ... if done well, THAT would be interesting in itself.

Yeah, I think I am going to have to pay a pro. I don't think my first car painting attempt should be a difficult one.

Thanks for the advise.

I painted gold Barracuda stripes on my friends 66 Barracuda. I will say I am not a painter! but it wasnt that difficult, as a novice I just took my time and painted light coats. I did mess up amd paint too much paint and the metal flakes ran down the front of the hood. The paint didn't run, just the metal flakes in the paint. I am currently working on my 66 Valiant, it will be painted "Dark Turquoise Poly" I am painting the trunk, door Jams and the interior before I paint the body. So far so good, I figure by the time I am done with small stuff painting the outside wont be a probelm.

A run in the metalic but not in the paint is exactly what a tiger strip is.
