has anyone had flang problems? I have had the headers for a few year but in my young age did not see that the pips were not flush with the flanges. Should I have them ground flush. I guess that this answer the question on why I could never get them to seal right |

The part of the header that seals against the head, should have a weld "ring", around the port. Do not grind this flush to the flange. If you are trying to use a stock gasket, that might be your problem. Try using a gasket from Mr Gasket, or the Cox Bros. My self, I use the Cox Bros gasket. |

Thanks for the info. I just gaged the weld rings and they very from .021 to .043 inches from the flange, is this ok. On the other hand I am using the clifford gaskets. When I bought the intake and head from them I bought a couple extra |

My neighbor had a set on his 66 Barracuda. His problem was that the header flange was not the same thickness as his intake manifold. When you torqued the bolts the triangle washers they were at such an angle that the header would not seal. We cut some spacers from some washers that we put under the triangle washers to solve the problem...in sortof a crude way. |

Hooker made headers for the SL6 that had a thinner flange, they came with spacers to make-up the difference. All the headers I have ever worked with were never flat accross the flange, I always grind them "dead flat" before installation and never have a sealing ptoblem. Some header flanges are so warpped that I have to machanically bend the header flange as straight as I can before doing the resurfacing. I measure the flange first to find the high and low points then place the unit on to a head with-out the gasket. I slip shims (flat iron) under the high spots, then "draw-down" the low points using the mounting hardware. Once it is mounted on the head (with-out the gasket)you can see the high and low spots by shining a light thru the joint. DD |
