Folks,

bforsse started a thread in parts wanted that made me go look at my block bracket area and bellhousing stash. On the theory that a guru might not see that thread I call it to attention and ask this derivative question.

All my A833 bellhousings have a high mount starter. How does a bracket like the one in bforsse's pic, or anybracket for that matter, allow a high mount starter?

Last summer I ran into this problem with my truck A833 swap. Trucks have a "universal" cast iron bell that takes A745, NP435..BUT with low mount starters only!

Looked to me as if converting a 60's truck meant using the A833 bellhousing with NO bracket so you can get a high mount starter into the A833 bell. With no bracket and the tranny supported at its rear and at engine only by bellhousing bolts, you have a long span with no under support. (From front engine mounts to rear tranny mount with no corssmember). So in the summer I was asking where you all would place a fabricated cross member...under the bell-to-engine connection and also under the tailhousing, or one, or both? Consensus seemed to be at tailhousing only and use front engine mounts. But I still feel uneasy with no bracket.

Which bracket is supposed to bridge the car slant six block to A333 bell? Is it that 70's one mentioned in parts, and anyone got one one I can get? I am about to just machine one for good luck out of 3/8 stock and use a small Denso style starter.

You can see above the master cylinder the 'ear' and the wires heading to the high mount starter...the 'ear' lies just below the starter opening...

You should've taken the 'ear' from the donor truck you got the A-833 from....as the NP435 ear is a bit 'wide' for use with the 'big' bellhousing and clutch
