Post subject:  Battery in the RIGHT REAR ???

I come from a long line and many years of oval track racing.
Can anybody PROVE that the weight of your rear mounted battery goes ONLY ON THE RT SIDE???
Thanks,
Terry

Relocating the battery to the right rear of a drag car (straight line start) is done to off-set the up-weighting of the right rear tire due to the torsional "twist" of the axle housing on the leaf springs.

Based on the clockwise rotation of the driveshaft - pinion gear the rearend housing tends to rock to the left side of the car and pushes down on the left tire. That is why a open diff. will spin the right rear tire when on a flat / straight surface, the rotational motion "up-weights" that tire and "plants" the left tire harder into the pavement.

Putting 50+ pounds of battery weight over the right rear corner helps counter-act this effect.

What about a car that doesn't go straight? Does it matter as much?

When it come to other forms of racing it is all about finding the right "set-up" for the course (track) you will be running. Put the weight where you need it to stay in first place, the trick is figuring-out what weight distribution works the best for your car on that track!

If your a long time oval racer, you should be familar with corner weights.
As Doc says, weight bais depends on the track. Where oval cars would want more left side weight, drag cars want more right rear and left front corner weights. Placing the battery in the right rear acheives this. I have a '67 Plymouth that came from the factory with a drag race package, part of the package was a larger than stock battery in the right rear of the trunk.

Post subject:  Rt rear battery

I understand, BUT using the higher rate Super Stock Rt rear spring is not enough to compensate for this??
This is why I believed the Battery would go on the left to help plant THAT side.
I understand the torsional dynamics of the driveline. The more gear you through into it the greater the tendancy for the pinion gear to want to climb up the ring gear instead of just pushing/driving it downward.
In oval track we wanted to plant the Lt Rear to give it bite out of the corner.
I want to guarantee we're coming out straight.
This isn't some Big Block ground pounder. It's a tricked out Slant/6.
I want to give every mechanical and physical advantage to this engine.
Thanks Gang,
Terry :D

what kind of venting is needed for a battery mounted in the trunk for a street car?

I have heard some nasty things happening......
