I've had a brand new unit and one rebuilt unit go bad in less than 100 miles. This can't be normal, but everything has been properly hooked up. Is there generally a problem with MSD ignitions for hyperpak cars, or is this a fluke? Have any of you slantsixers had problems with these units? Thanks.

My msd 6a box has been going without a hitch... I don't see how hyperpack or not will make a difference in the ignition box itself.

Check your alternator/regulator and make sure voltage isn't abnormally high, especially when revving the car.

You haven't been welding on the car have you? MSD recomends disconnect the box if you do go welding on the car body.

Is there anything else funky going on with the car? What coil are you using?

I have a friend who hooked up everything like MSD hansbook says for mopars... and he fried his box. I cutted and removed all those extra wiring including the ballast and all, and I fed the smal gage red wire with I1 + I2 and I've never had a problem

Something he is doing is wrong. If he fried his box, wired yours and your box(es) fried. then all signs point to how he installed them.

You may want to trace the wires he did and let us know what is going where...something is definately wrong. It could be a few things.

My car had a overcharging issue and saw about 18volts for a little while. Some wires in the factory harness burnt, but the MSD still works fine. So i dont think its getting too much voltage..lots of race cars run them, with higher voltages than most our cars..

I currently have three MSD boxes in use,two 6al and one Blaster,and one of the 6al boxes is indeed installed on a HyperPak 170 and has had no problems and the other 6al has been installed on my pickup for about 80,000 miles and zero problems.
It is kinda hard to hook up a 6al wrong,but I suppose it can be done.A voltage spike may possibly fry one but I have had that happen on my truck and no problems. Did it just stop firing?Have you called MSD yet?
It is possible that this is a fluke.

Id say a thin possibility...He has fried two himself (if i read it right), and the friend that wires his up, burnt his up too.

Check all the wiring yourself...Its not too difficult. If you have any questions we're here

goody, I think you got it wrong: my MSD 6Al is fine... and I wired it. I just poiinted out that I removed all thise unnecesary wires (didn't leave them hanging out useless like the MSD installation notes tells you to...)
I'd say that something VERY wrong is happening there... MSD boxed can withstand up to 24V in peaks w/o going bad.

What were the 'unnecesary' wires that you removed? If i remember right, i do not have any open wires in my harness out of my msd box..

Either the points wire (white) or the magnetic pickup wires (violet & green) should not be used. One or the other gets used. The only exception I recall is, when using the magnetic pickup wires for the trigger, you can wire the points (white) wire to a toggle switch, and from the switch to ground to act as an ignition kill switch/anti-theft switch.


Been running my 6AL for 3 years with no problems as well.
