How can you tell if a used aftermarket wheel will fit a sbp A-body?

I am looking for the old-style slotted aluminum wheels. (what's that style called?)
When you're buying used wheels, how do you know if they'll fit?

Did those aftermarket wheels fit ford and mopar, or did they make different models for each?

I don't know nothin about wheels

They're called "aluminum slots" or "slotted mags" usually. Anyway, just make sure you get something with the 5 x 4" bolt pattern (sbp). No other vehicles besides our A body cars used this bolt pattern (as far as I know). Most of the slotted mags I have seen have measured 14" x 7" and usually have a 4" backspacing. You probably want to stay around a 4" backspacing. You can measure this from the rear lip of the wheel to the back side of the mounting flange.

As far as knowing what will fit, what year/style car are you getting these for?

This is for a 63 Valiant with 10" front drums from a 66.

Do the aftermarket wheels fit the centers like the stock wheels, or do they just rely on the lug nuts to center?

Be careful some companies will try to sell you rims on the 5X100mm bolt pattern and say it is the same. They will bolt on but the lug will not be in the center of its holes in the rims. If my bad hs math is correct 4" is actually 101.6 mm so make sure they are actually 5X4".

These are what you want, right?

They have them in 5 x 4" bolt circle and 4" backspace, but only in a 15 x 7".

See part number A69-5769
