I need to lean out my Cartyer BBD I just installed, and I need to know if the jets installed in Edelbrock Performer carbs will work in a late 70s Carter BBD. Does anyone know? THanks! |

I find it hard to believe you need to go leaner in a late 70s BBD,,,,, |

The trail of black smoke behind my van when I drive says I do. I am thinking maybe someone swapped some different jets into the carb at some point. |

The rumor is that they do and I was under the impression that you had tried them already. I suspect the metering rods are mis-adjusted. The rebuild kits don't specify a setting for them. I have mine set at 25/64's at the tab on the arm. But then I am using a early '70s 318 BBD and it was actually a little lean for my engine. Is the choke adjusted correctly? Does the exhaust flapper valve work correctly? Are you supplying a warm air source to the carb? If any of those is no, that will cause a black smoke cloud behind your van when the carb starts to ice up. |

I think you may find the jets are fine, but the carb's got other (very serious) problems. Try swappin' on a different one!

Thanks for the tips guys! Kesteb- I have not tried it, but i have heard that they do swap. I was looking for some confirmation. I will try swapping the jets this weekend. I will be spending time this weekend messing with carbs and trying to get a feedback crb to wqork, as well as double checking the adjustments on the BBD. |

Okay, I am happy to report that Edelbrock jets WILL swap into a BBD. This means slanters have many more options when it comes to fine tuning a hopped up motor. Metering rods won't swap though. I reset the metering rods, turned the curb idle mixture screws to only two turns out, raised the float, and hooked the AIR pump back up correctly. So far no more black cloud. I also readjusted the kickdown and found about another 1/3 inch of adjustment I could make and it seems to have fixed that problem. So far, life is good. |
