Post subject:  Jumped Timing Chain

I have a Slant 6 in an 87 Dodge 150 PU. The timing chain jumped. So I removed the the timing chain cover. When loosening the uppermost bolt, a quart or more of antifreeze came out of the bolt hole. The engine dieseled badly, which led me to beleive the timing chain jumped. Has anyone had this happen before? Does anyone know what this means.

Well, I've never taken a slant apart, but my 360 did the same thing when I took the timing cover off. Dieseling is usually a carb problem.

The reason a 360 dumps coolant is because the timing cover has coolant passages running through it. After all the water pump does bolt to the front of its timing cover. I don't remember having one dump coolant, but it probaly just means that one of the timing cover bolts threads into the cooling jacket at the front of the block. Take a small screwdriver/nail and stick it into the bolt holes to see if they have bottoms. Make sure you use some kind of sealer on the threads of the timing cover bolts if they do indeed hit coolant.
