Post subject:  polishing paint job
Being broke I painted my car with Rustoleum's hammered finish spray paint. I used the verdigris green finish and the hammered effect is cool and does, as i had hoped, hide some of the surface imperfections as i didn't have the time to really prep the car 100%. the only problem is slight differences in sheen. i want to use some sort of polishing compound over the car to even out the sheen and then wax it. so i am asking for advice on products and application method.

all i know so far is move in a linear direction, not circular so it is tougher to see scratches.

i got some zymol wax having heard it was great stuff. however, someone since has told me that it doesn't last too long on a daily driver. so what should i buy and then what should i do with it?

Part of the reason you have an uneven "sheen" is because when you use a rattle can you make lots of passes and everywhere that the spray pattern overlaps is going to be darker than the other areas. If you scuff it down with like a 320 sanding sponge you should be able to even it out quite a bit. You should try (if you ever do it again, but spray paint is real bad at looking good) to start with lighter coats, blocking it down in between to keep it even and smooth, then clear coat it at the end.

I actually like "Velvet" jobs on some cars, especially budget rods. Primer comes in so many colors now too besides white, black, and grey.

I have to agree with swing lo, if you are on a budget, velvet is the way to go. It looks great, its in-expensive, its easy to touch up, and its quickly gaining popularity.

As for the polish or rubbing compound, any polish will do. With the exception of the corse properties, they're all pretty much the same.

Once I painted an 89' Mini Ramvan white with a sponge roller.using rust paint.With the humidity/temperature just right and the paint thinned alittle, I managed to get it glass smooth, better than some bodyshop spray jobs I had seen. The only problem is I learned as I went so some parts looked progressively bad to good. When it comes to hiding, white is the best down to black which picks up ever little flaw.
I did a velvet black spray can job on the hood of my 85' van a couple of days ago ( bird crapped on it after I finished it) I used Krylon 'tough enamel' rust paint velvet black >its hard to screw up with this stuff! Even though there was a breeze and it was a little cold outside, the finish turned out excellent! It has a low sheen that holds up better to weather than traditional 'flat' black. 8)
