Ok here we go. Car is '71 duster that had points of course. Then we convereted it to a mopar electronic ignition setup and it ran good. Today the electronic setup came off the car and the msd 6al was installed. Fired up quickly.
But then I tried to drive it: stutter, stutter, miss, etc. This was with
the ballast resistor running in bypass? (wires run together). Then tried unhooking
it completly - of course then you know what happened--fire up then die.
Then hooked the ballast back up. Miss,Miss:stutter..etc. Any ideas here?
Here is some specs-
*Champion plugs only about 2 months old (not enough gap?? set at .045)
*Accel 300+ race wires- Were running just fine on the mopar electronic
*Cap and rotor button checked ok as well.
*Checked all the wiring for the msd everthing seemed ok....
Ok Does anybody know about the ballast resistor setups for these--
??? This is seriously puzzling me......

Oh yeah I have the matching msd blaster2 coil as well....

Check the polarity of the 2-wire connections from the distributor to the MSD box, and from the MSD box to the ignition coil.

I'm using the MSD 6A, blaster off road coil, and MSD wires. Mine runs fine with or without the ballast resistor. I'm not familiar with those Accel wires, are they spiral wound?

Post subject:  Yep

They sure are- Spiral core.

Post subject:  Thanks SSD

Thanks- SlantSixDan- Right on the $$$! Switched the two wires to the
distributor and no more stutter! MSD 6 series igntion rocks!! I doubt ever
considering mopar conversion again- Wow! Got rid of that random miss too!! :D

Ummm, Featherduster? Did you get a full install guide with your MSD box? If so, read deeper into the text......you'll find referance to the polarity check.
I got my box used, and downloaded from the MSD site. Kind of surprised me to see that there was a polarity to be followed.

That was the one thing with my new setup that - didn't give me trouble!
:D
Mine came with all the directions though and they definetely mentioned the polarity of the wires! Only two wires going to the coil and have to be on the correct terminals.
Glad to see you got yours figured out!

I am now thinking about two things - a tack - since the system has a place to plug one in, and a kill switch - since it has an extra wire that they say can be used as a kill switch terminal! Gotta figure out where to hide the switch though.

Later,
Dan

Well ...Got to excited unfortunatly :( Got the chance to road test the
car thursday night but I find out that after a while the msd box its' self
was getting very warm at this point it was becoming very hard to start
after sitting for a small period of time- And on a couple of tries it didn't fire
until it cooled down a little. It is mounted under the hood on the battery
side of which I assume that the box is catching a heavy amount of heat
from the header. Just a guess here??? Would remounting in the interior help?? This is my first time installing an ignition of this type so I assume
especially for me that this a trial and error process like most things...  Any help is much appreciated

When I put my 6A in I found the the timming was way off. It changed from the stock box. Did you re-check it with a timming light? That might be your hot start problem.

Yes- Right on cralt! Timing way off. Still gotta play with it some. Im probably gonna still try doing the gm hei conversion and see how that
does. Thanks! :D

don't sell shor your MSD

I found that is a great item but wiring instruction sucks. You have to chop off all the ballast/coil/ignition wiring and rewire it

Mine is happy on the passg fenderwell top, I runned 2 heavy wires thru all the regular wiring location straight to the battery, kept the coil and dist wires as short as possible (dist connector is facing front of the car) and Y fed the light red wire with I1+I2, but I connected them both wires coming thru the connector on the firewall and ran like crap, I merged them right after the ignition switch and still got those 2 wires together feeding the light red wire and BINGO the problems went away along with the annoying ballast and such.

Thanks argentina-slantsixer- I may have to do some more fiddling with it.
Im still in the experimentation stages-

no problema

if you want I can fix a wiring and placement diagram for you... plus you don't really have to use the third unused cable for theft deterrant device. You can splice your neutral safety switch wire if you have an auto trans and hide a switch for it underdash or elsewhere. Engine won't even turn! talk about a turn off for the burglar...
