The aluminum block slant six was offered for a few years in the early 60s. Not that many were made and corrosion has claimed most of the survivors. They are good castings but the weight savings over the iron block are really not worth it. I think Dan actually has one of these in his Lancer. If you get one DO NOT USE DEX-COOL! |

I've got the original aluminum 225 in my '62 Lancer. Got a spare engine in storage. Had another that I put in my '65, left it in when I sold it. Had two others I had to sell when I moved away from Denver. Quote: If you get one DO NOT USE DEX-COOL!
Excellent advice whatever engine you've got. Dex-Cool = big repair bills.

I respectfully disagree with Jeb; the weight savings (70-80lbs) are definitely worth something. Very flat handling even w/o a sway bar. Bushings and all other suspension components seem to last longer. Steering is lighter (even with a 20:1 manual box). Now if we could just get that aluminum head! |

I was talking about weight savings in terms of drag racing. 70-80 pounds less would be very helpful in terms of handling. A magazine not too long ago built two slant sixes, one aluminum and one iron. Both engines were built to the same specs and the aluminum engine was no faster than the iron one. An aluminum block engine has parts that are hard to come by also. |
