Dan- I know in several different posts you have recommended different parts as being superior than others, such as a rotor with a wider tip, or the best spark plugs for the money. Would you be willing to post a list of part numbers and manufactures for each of your favorite items used in a basic tuneup? Like, cap, rotor, plugs, wires, filters? I am trying to make a list of the best parts to buy to acheive the best performance and economy form off the shelf parts I can order through the local parts store. Thanks! |

Aha! Taken from this thread Quote:
Cap: Standard-Bluestreak CH-410X
Rotor: NAPA Echlin MO-3000 (usually special order; DON'T use an Echlin cap) Plugs: NGK ZFR5N gapped 0.040" if you've got a '74-down style head with the spark plug tubes Plug wires: Magnecor Thanks Dan! |

Gee, you're welcome (even if I didn't have to type a single keystroke!) |

I just dug up this old post and had a thought... When i worked at carquest our in house dist caps were provided by Standard and had the same part numbers CH 410 and CH 410X, I'm wondering if these are the same as Bluestreaks brand because they are much cheaper without the Bluestreak label and easier to find... they also feature the same brass contacts and all that... |

Accel caps are Echlin caps.

CarQuest's in-house stuff was usually first-rate, and yeah, their ignition stuff was all Standard and BlueStreak. But, this is not always true at all parts stores. Often house brands are factory seconds or copycats.

I had a run-in with bad Echlin caps just this week. Napa's regular cap is made by Standard, and I had asked for a Standard cap but they brought out the Echlin one. It had one terminal that was visibly ground wrong. So after taking the first cap back, the parts guy brought out a second Echlin cap along with the Standard. Guess he refused to believe it was anything but a fluke. Well, the second cap had a visible defect on one terminal - and a second terminal that hadn't been ground at all. Still had a good 3-4 mm of plastic on the top of the terminal. Unbelievably bad QC there. |

Echlin is now owned by Standard. But yeah, the ground-off-centre terminals have been the problem with Echlin caps for well over a decade now. |

... which is quite eccentric. |
