Is it necesary to replace the spark plug tubes (the metal sleeves) when rebuilding an engine? I know there are supposed to be small o-rings that accompany them. I have a '66 225 that I am rebuilding and trying to do a good job with it. taking my time, but I am not building a race motor, just something with a tad more gusto (.060 over with CompCams 252 cam).

So replace spark plug sleeves or not necessary?

Naw, as long as they aren't beat up I don't see why. Inspect the chamber end of them to make sure they are flat and don't have any sharp edges. If they do file them flat and clean up any metal powder so it doesn't enter the engine.

The seals are availible aftermarket as well, felpro ES12794. Just to be clear - these seal the tube to the outside of the head, there is no o-ring that seals it to the inside of the head. That is done by the spark plug pinching the sleeve between it and the head.

I got them tubes as a set from ebay... at the very reasonable cost of $20 plus shipping. Gonna see if I have seller's ID so I can pass it on to you.

What is? The $9.95 price? How much do pay for them? If I remember corectly, the last ones I got at NAPA were a little over $1.00 ea, so that price is not outragous, but with shipping figured in, it is better to get them locally.

Ooofff... picutre is of one seal, no where does he use plural "seals" anywhere, methinks it is for a single seal.

C'mon you guys! Ain't you been watching the B-J auctions?! Everybody knows anything Mopar is selling for premium prices, so the parts automatically get more expensive!

Keep in mind, if you get an engine rebuild kit or a gasket kit, it should include the tube gaskets. Also don't forget to cut metal ring off the spark plugs before installing them. I always forget that.

I am supposed to remove that metal washer/ring that is on the threaded side of the spark plug? I never knew that. What is the reason behind this?

60-62 use the tubes and the washers

63up (until there's no tubes) use just the tubes.


The tube takes the place of the washer/seal for 63up
