Post subject:  A833 non overdrive lube suggestions?

I've been following the articles published under 833 oil search string and I don't seem to find a consense about what kind of lubricant I should use on my transmission.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

thanks.

PS: it's an A833 close ratio slip yoke unit.

My 65 FSM states:

Warm Climate
Multi-Purpose Gear Oil SAE 140

Cold Climate
Multi-Purpose Gear Oil SAE 80 or 90

So that would be a GL-4 oil at above weights.

Although I think 140 is a bit thick.

I'd probably use a 75w-90 synthetic........

thanks ed

what's the worst case scenario? if I go too thin it will become noisy and if I go too thick it will become hard to shift... I guess I can fill it with SOMETHING and then give it a try and see what happens under my climate and my style of driving/shifting... huh?

i run a combination of atf and gear oil in my tranny. shifts fine and no noise yet. i put one quart of atf in and then top off with whatever flavor of gear oil i happen to have at the time, although i tend to stay away from the thicker stuff. 75/90 weight seems to work pretty well.

...huh? Redline makes good stuff. I don't recall ever having said anything else. Are you maybe thinking of my refusal to fall for Scamsoil?

hey zedpapa how does your 833 responds to that lube mixture? syncros? gear noise? gear chipping when lowering gears? shifter resistance?

so I should use some low weighted GL4 plus ATF or other light oil?

Red Line MT-90 all the way. I had an A833 I thought shifted well only because it did. I put MT-90 in place of the 80W-90 GL-5 (too slippery) and could shift the box as fast as I could move the lever with no clashing, grinding, etc. I'm sure it also helped that I corrected the bellhousing to block alignment with offset dowels and had a 9 1/4" clutch. Smaller disc has a lower polar moment and the syncros don't have to work as hard.

If you just need 'something' in there to drive the car you can use anything from ATF to motor oil to Red Line. The gear box really doesn't mind much.

I can't get redline down here so I'm looking to get specs that later on I can go to a lube shop and repeat like a parrot.

I just dont want clashing and grinding, I can live with a harder shifter... since I have power steering I can use the discharge of extra strenght at some other point

so far i haven't had any problems. my shifting is a little on the harder side but i have the taxi clutch(10.125" dia.). i am considering switching to the smaller 9.25" unit for reasons mentioned(easier shifting). one thing is the new synchros i put don't seem to grab as good as they could. this probably from wear on the surface where the synchro grabs, or from the clutch. other than that i don't have any problems and love this tranny. i did the same as you, yanked the 904 in favor of the 833OD. best thing i ever did to this car.

well, today I inspected the transmission and it's really nice, all the linkage is there and working (I'll just have to renew some of the wire locks on some of the links) was filled with a dark, thick red stuff that seemed a little heavier that ATF... did my shifting while my father was spinning the input shaft and everything worked just fine. No hard to turn spots whatsoever even going thru the gears, felt nice. Hurst shifters are so much better than the crappy inland reverse lockup trigger I used to have... is just perfect. Now I have to figure out what I'm going to use for clutch assembly... I was thinking 10" but several articles I read mention the "roughness" that comes with bigger units so I think I'll use a double diaphragm pressure plate instead of the original one... any inputs on that?
