Post subject:  Idle Problem Update And Question

I earlier reported that I lost my idle after the car warmed up. That wasn't exactly true, come to find out. The car runs great cold or warmed up. How far I drive the car, etc.... doesn't seem to matter. Now here comes the thing that does. Whenever the outside weather is above say 85 degrees, that is when the problem occurs. So on cooler days like this one today in Sacramento, I drove it all over the place this morning without a problem. If I come home from work on a hotter day, just driving it until the engine warms up, it gets a flat spot on the carb, and is really not having a good idle. Sorry, I am no mechanic. But this one is a little too odd for me. Any ideas?

Temperature-related poor idling and stumbling is usually related to overheating of the fuel—especially with the California fuel formulation. You'll want to do the fuel line modification to reduce heat transfer to the fuel. Check your exhaust manifold heat riser valve to make sure it moves freely and shifts to the "heat off" position when the engine warms up. Of course, the carburetor has to be in good condition, without vacuum leaks (loose/sloppy throttle shaft? Check!) and with a correctly-adjusted float.

Thanks Dan, I do believe you hit my problem. You're THE MAN again, in my book. I'm no mechanic, but those are within my capabilities.

That is something I would like to try myself, the metal line has been tugged and pushed more than I like and it rotting at the support clip looks like a fire waiting to happen. this sould give a lot more play to get around the fuel filter when checking plugs, distibutor etc.
