| Post subject: | 74 Dart Swinger seat belt interlock |
I'm sure the topic has been covered somewhere earlier, I just haven't found the thread. My sons 74 has the interlock bypass switch rewired and run under the dash, actually hanging by three wires from the parking brake handle. The "mechanic" who owned it before thought it was some sporadic anti-theft device. I remember back in the day and all the nightmare problems these were. So, I have a background in mechanics, avionics (USAF) and a BS in manufacturing engineering. I've rewired C130's, hotrods, Harleys and way too many dune buggies to think about. Problem is when one of those C130's collapsed on me while I was fixing a radar, my neck and back was broken and now it makes climbing under dashes to chase wires difficult. Can someone give me the quick and easy to d/c the whole interlock system so I can s-can it? I do have a 74 MOTORS manual with a troubleshooting block diagram of the interlock system but I don't have the actual 74 wiring diagram for the car. I try and explain to my son that this system and the 85mph speedos of the '80's is the result of numb-skull legislators trying to mandate human behavior. Ah... I digress but please, any help? |

If I'm not mistaken, you can bypass the interlock system by unplugging the wire connectors at the seat sensors. The system then never "sees" anyone sitting in the seat, therefore never insists on the belts being buckled before allowing the engine to crank. |

Dan is right. I unhooked them at the seat on my 74 Duster and never had a problem again. |

I love this simple easy route. I'll have my son yank them asap. He's learning to drive and before the carb was replaced and set correctly it used to stall and he would have to think fast to shift to neutral, push the reset button so the ignition would crank it back up all the while steering with dead engine power steering by armstrong! |

Ditto on the unplugging wires. Actually, when we put my son's '74 Dart Sport back together, we didn't bother running the portion of the harness that plugs together behind the passenger kick panel and extends underneath the seats. The only odd thing about it is that ocassionally the buzzer goes off for a couple of seconds, or the seat belt light comes on for a few. We have never had problems starting the car. Jerry |
