Post subject:  Ok need a SuperSix conversion checklist, and also...

Welp, I need to know everrryything i will need to do a nice super six swap. Nothing mickey moused. I have a couple kickdown linkages to choose from two 1 piece ones from cars, and a couple truck ones. I have a couple throttle cables and the necessary brackets. and three cast intakes lol.

So i have the linkages/throttle cable, intake and will be aquiring a SS exhaust manifold.

I know ill need a carb, and ill use the SS exhaust manifold as long as it will bolt up to my original exhaust just fine. Buddy has one that he just has to weld up a crack that he will give me from a SS.

What carb should i buy? Figure i will grab one off a junkyard 318 and rebuild it.

The intake/exhaust manifold studs i think i'd like to replace with new ones and new nuts/washers and such. Anyone know of a online source where i can get the studs? I know i cant get much of anything like that here locally...all the hardware stores arent much for the coarse/fine threaded automotive studs.

Best place where i can get a intake/exhaust gasket, and the best sealing of course? Any other recommendations are welcome and appriciated. ive pulled a couple apart, but i haven't tried to put one together to use as a daily driver.

Thanks!!
-Mike

There is no such thing as a Super Six exhaust manifold. 1bbl and 2bbl exhaust manifolds are the same.

It's easiest to use an actual Super Six carb. The 318 carb will need some reworking to run and hook up properly on a slant.

So one doesnt have 2" exhaust and the other have 2 1/4"? And the choke setup is the same?

From that link
"The Super Six will work fine with your stock exhaust system, but remember that the factory Super Six cars had a 2 1/4 inch exhaust pipe as opposed to the 1 1/2 to 1 7/8 sized system that came stock on most 1 bbl slant six cars. The factory did this for a reason: the two barrel carb flows more air into the engine, and thus necessitates the ability to pass more air out of the engine. If you Super Six your car it is highly recommended that you also upgrade your exhaust system."

I'll see if i can find another one, didnt they come with a holley or a carter? Which would i want?

And anything on finding the intake/exhaust studs?

Thanks

With the exception of the choke pocket, the exhaust manifolds are identical. The bigger exhaust size was only in the actual exhaust pipe, not the manifold.

A one barrel exhaust manifold can be made to work by cutting the back wall out of the one barrel choke pocket.

I recommend the slant six specific Carter BBD to start with.

Any good hardware store should be able to get you studs. emember, you don't have to keep the factory stud setup. Just so long as the thread of the stud/bolt that you use matches the thread in the head.

Not quite right. The choke pocket difference is by year, not by carburetor type. All the '73-up exhaust manifolds have a choke well with no back wall. A 1bbl or a 2bbl choke thermostat (original or electric update) will bolt right on. The '60-'69 exhaust manifolds have a choke well with a rear wall that can be cut to accommodate the '73-up 1bbl or 2bbl original-type choke thermostats (no need to cut if you're putting on the electric update, which mounts atop the well rather than down in it). The '70-'72 exhausts have an open stove rather than a well; they are more difficult to work with (gasket joint, gasket no longer available), there's no mounting an original-type 2bbl choke thermostat on these, and while the electric type will fit, getting the stove to seal properly will be an even more difficult task than it is with the original style 1bbl choke thermostats.)

There seem to be quite a few different BBD's out there. What IS specific to the slant six? Is it staged or non-staged? Thanks

There are no staged/progressive BBDs. The Super-Six BBD differs from the V8 carbs in throttle bore diameter, choke lever configuration, choke plate and air horn shape/size.
