There is an Australian company that apparently is going to manufacture gear drives for the slant six: http://www.pentastarparts.com.au/work_in_progress.html What would be the advantage to this? |

Mostly it's more accurate since you don't have to worry about chain stretch. It's also stronger and probably quieter though I don't know that for sure. Gear driven timing sets have been in common use on V8 racing engines for some time now. |

Interesting information there... they are working on a lot more than timing gears. |

I was under the impression gears are more accurate, but not as quiet. (and more $$)Strength isn't really an issue, since the timing chain on a slant six usually lasts forever. (but less and less accurate over time) |

Pretty much: More accurate (no stretch like a timing chain...although the roller chain isn't like the OEM timing set) Noisy (you'll know when a gear set V-8 is sitting next to you, it sounds like a turbo whine over the low rumpty-rump) Drags on the engine a bit: On a hi-po drag/race vehicle (big torquey/ high HP engine) where the timing accuracy would make up for the friction of the setup this is not a real problem (trade one thing for another)...I only know from a buddy who has run both types on his Nova II drag car...he lost 30 hp out of his small block drag car, but his top end timing was so much better than running the chain that his ET's were same or marginally better... -D.Idiot |

Okay. Sounds like it isn't worth it on a slant six. Thanks! |
