Post subject:  Crankshaft pully wobbles with corresponding knock

loudish knocking noise corresponding with slight wobble of crankshaft pulley while engine runs.

the pully does not appear to be loose only slight play but not loose on shaft

gets louder as speed gets higher...

looking to troubleshoot this. thanks in advance....

It sounds like it might be that your harmonic balancer (pulley is part of it) has split down the keyway. It will get looser and knock more as it continues to split and could fly off. Did you recently remove/install the balancer?

Did someone jack up the engine by the pulley?

Just had brake work done but dont know why they would do this however the frame is badly rusted so maybe....

I was not there....it did happen there after dont remember but maybe was starting to occur before.....cant say....

the only physical evidence is that the pully turns round about a quarter inch maybe less not loose on shaft whole pully turns does not move back to front.....

You mean you can rotate the damper back and forth 1/4". Get the thing off there and see what happened!

the whole pully rotates- from nut on front through to everything I can see in front of the engine behind the pully etc. which is not much space but looks like everything is turning together.

Sounds like the damper is broken at the keyway like Lou mentioned. You need to pull it. Don't run the engine until it's fixed or you can damage the crank. In fact you may already have buggered the keyway in the crank.

Ok from a highly regarded mechanic friend who actually rebuilt this slant 6 engine a few years back.....

He says try tightening the bolt that holds it on.

Now the question is .....how is this threaded.....?

One would assume that turning the bolt clockwise would turn the shaft and the engine.....

Therefore it seems to be logical that it would be reverse threaded. otherwise i shall have to grab the pulley somehow or....

Back to work will check in later.....it would be good if this does it....

The bolt has nothing to do with it. Some slants even came from the factory without a bolt. The damper is pressed on, not bolted on, and undoubtedly it has split like Lou and Josh said. Pull it off before it flies through the hood like a frissbee.

checked bolts anyway.....all tight the three small bolts could be tightened and were but no change.

Still same symptoms- more a front to back movement every so often than a wobble.....

dont have a puller but doesnt look too hard to remove- is it worth the effort to do it now or take it to a puller....I guess loosening up the fan belt and pulling it off is not difficult.....

I am guessing its just the central bolt that needs to come off...?

There shouild be no movement at all as previously mentioned. Running the car will literally shave the end of the crank and then you are done. Pull it, sooner the better.

Yikes!

This is actually dangerous (peering under hood while revving engine...)

The three bolts just hold the pulley to the damper. You need to remove the damper before driving the car any more....yes really...no kidding.

When that thing grenades you will think you hit an IED.

Ok I believe...

now the best way to get it off.....I will try taking the bolt off and working it loose....i will remember which way it came out just in case....

if it does not come off how do I get it off....

out to unbolt....

My guess is that once you get the big end bolt out, the damper/pulley will basically fall/slide off by hand.
