Hi Y'all, I am in the mood to tackle an old one port master cylinder as used in brakes and clutch in old mopars. My objective is to see if I can get the top to stop dribbling brake fluid down the outside of the cylinder. I don't know if there is a gasket anyone has found to work or if I have to mill the cylinder lip and the lid lip. I have cussed these cylinders for 40 years...but never stopped the dribble. Anyone succeed in this task? rock '64d100 |

A rubber gasket might do it. I think the fluid seeps thru the cardboard on that's on there. Might have to make a rubber gasket out of an old inner tube |

Disassemble an old slant fuel pump and grind the rivet head holding the metal disc to the rubber diaphram. Good fit, right size center hole and the rubber seals to the resevoir lip rather nicely. I usually replace the cap screw with a 1/4" 20 stud (from roll thread) and wing nut at the same time. Lets me open'er up with no wrench needed. |

Thanks guys! Great Ideas!! I will do it today (make an inner tube gasket). I would have guessed that brake fluid would dissolve a tube...glad to know different. As to wing nut, uhh, I shoulda thought of that! I just put in a nice stainless bolt that needed a wrench! How did you safely open up a fuel pump? I had an old one and was curious to look in it but it has a lip bent around the lower half from the top half. I thought about cutting it open with a metal cuttting cutoff saw, but wasn't sure I would have all the gas out of it...even if I tossed it in a pail of water a while. Thanks rock '64d100 |

Couple different ways for that........ I blow air through the pump for a minute or two, the volume of vapors left aren't enough to catch when I grind the rolled lip off on the bench grinder. The rolled lip could also be pried back a section at a time with regular pliers, similar to opening a five gallon tin. A bit on the tedious side for my tastes. I guess you could keep a piece of something heavy enough to quickly wrap it in if you're still worried about a fire, (of course you wouldn't use water on a liquid fire). I keep a couple powder extinguishers on the bench even though I've never had to use one in the garage. |
