i know this is a long shot, but i have this awful engine noise. its so bad i didn't want to move the car so its parked about 10 miles from home and tommorow being memorial day no garage will be open.

i heard it first on the highway. it was trebly, it sounded like an old sewing machine, in time with the engine. it only sounded when i pressed on the gas. that was last night. the car was low on oil so i put in a quart and a half. i had slacked on checking up on the oil.

i drove home and didn't hear it so thought things were fine. the next morning i start her up, she sounds great. but as the car gets warm the sound comes back. so i think maybe its knocking. i stop the car, retard the timing, it doesn't help. so i let it cool down, then i go fill up with chevron 93 to see if that helps.

i get back on the highway and the sound is worse, so i pull off. now it makes a grinding sound as the engine slows. i pull over. i check under the hood and see a red glow underneath the carburetor. its night time and i guess the manifold had gotten so hot it glowed red.

does anyone have any guesses? from where i was seated in the drivers seat the sound came from the left side of the car, but when the hood was open it came from the engine. it sounded when the car was parked and i pulled on the throttle with my hand.

thanks for your help. enjoy your memorial day.
matt

Sorry my friend, but it sounds like your engine's on it's way out. The /6 is a great motor, but you still have to put oil in it. Besides checking for other obvious sources of noise, ie: pulleys, fan, etc, there's nothing else you can really do if it's at that point except start tearing the engine down to find the problem, or swap it out. Or just drive it till it dies. Good luck

I wouldn't worry overly about taking it a quart and a half low.... I ran mine down to being 4 quarts low one time, and there were no funny noises when I filled it back up. (New engine was sitting on the stand ready to go in and I hadn't been paying attention to my oil level.) Sounds like a potential lifter issue; is it hydraulic or mechanical? That's the first place I'd start looking.
