Putting together the slant, having a garage full of people, and looking at my work the morning after, I have a piston facing the wrong direction. oil pan gasket on and sealed. Do I have to tear it all apart and rotate the piston, or will this have any effect what so ever on the motor........?

I put the pistons all on backwards on my 360 motor, and on purpose. For reasons I don;t understand, at least in the v-8, there is a slight difference, and to turn them around is a deep dark enginebuilders secret that supposedly decreases the internal friction in the engine, but makes them a little noisier until they warm up. Maybe this was just folklore that I fell for, but that is what I did. They claim an increase of about 5% in HP with this mod. It did not hurt a thing. The only thing here though,is that you only did one. I would want them all one way or the other. Can anyone here speak to the validity of the HP increase claim? My 360 was assembled this way, and I never had any problems.

I had a similar problem putting together an engine with friends hanging out and "helping" :evil: . Wrong caps on the rods. That took a while to straighten out. It is true that racers do install pistons backwards for less friction with the trade off of having piston slap at cold startups. Having one piston and not the others is probably fine. I personally would want to recheck everything done that night just to be sure everything is torqued right, etc. Gaskets are cheap compared to what could have been overlooked. Good luck and tell us what mods you have.

There was something about Chrysler engineers reversing pistons and/or rods at some year point, but I can't find it now.

IMPORTANT :!:

The rods have oil squirt holes to lube the camshaft. If they are not pointing at the cam, the lobes may not get enough oil.

If your machine shop put the pistons on the rods all in the same orientation relative to the squirt holes, then one (or five) of your squirt holes are not facing the cam.

It MAY be OK to run without all the squirt holes facing the cam, but I wouldn't try that experiment without say so from someone here with experience. IIRC, the aluminum engine specs that the squirt holes do not face the cam??

ten years a go i built a 360 engine for a 72 Dart me and my engine builder put them in backward for a reason. This car was going to be a street /strip car. He had one of the old Direct Connection engine builders guide. I can not rembember the clerance but it is something about five thousand of an inch offset on the rod or piston. Crysler did this for piston slap. If you turned them backward it would free them up by that amount. That engine is now in a 65 Baracuda and still will melt the tires when you hit the go pedel. The engine now has about 10000 miles on it and have had no problems. Hell 284 484 purple cam flowmasters yall aint going to here no piston slap. Thanks Ron Parker :D

Well the Torques are all correct only since I was the only one doing that.....I also should mention that the new pistons are all flat, with only a cut v in the top very small.........to show front of piston...... so for what Im hearing is pull the pan and turn the piston that is the wrong way.....so the oil goes on the cam.....?

I'd worry about the rod being backwards more than the piston.
OEM pistons have a .030 pin offset to the thrust side to reduce piston slap. Reversing the pistons on the rods give a better and/or different rod angle and TDC dwell time. There may be some power in this but piston slap noise will increase. How much power? Well, custom aftermarket pistons have zero offset unless requested. If there was more power vs durability to be had with offsets to the non-thrust side, most would have it.

All the pistons are backwards in my motor. I guess that means I have a "Georgia" motor, huh? :shock:














Mike put them that way so we could use most of the valve clearance notches in my KB pistons. I need all the room I can get with that .675" roller in there. :twisted:
