Is there any automatic trans that would get good mileage in my '65 Valiant? |

I like the A-999 auto transmission with the lockup tranny for gas mileage. It has lower first and second gear ratios but the same final drive ratio and it has a lockup tranny. This means you can run 2.9 gears but still have okay accelleration but cruise at low RPMS. |

I'm going to assume this is probably a stupid question, but . . .Is there such a thing as an automatic trans with OD for these things? |

Yes and no. THere was never a factory slant six specific four speed automatic offered, but, you can use the 64-67 A-100 and D series truck/van transmission adapter plate assembly to bolt an A-500 or A-518 automatic overdrive for a smallblock to the back of the slant. This is a rather expensive proposition since the adapter plates are rare, and the A-500 transmiussions are expensive. |

That sounds a bit like what a Mopar guy at a local Advance was telling me. There seems to be an overdrive unit I could buy that will go in in place of the tail cone on my manual. To the tune of $2300!Thanks |

Sounds like he was talking about a Gear Vendors unit, maytbe?

sorry if this sounds like a stupid question ross, but why would you want to swap from a stick to an auto for mileage? if the car is already a 4 speed (or a 3 speed on the floor for that matter) wouldn't a 4 speed overdrive trans be the better choice? automatics tend to be heavier and soak up like 2-3 times the horsepower (less efficient) to drive them. i'm thinking it would also be cheaper. in case you haven't heard, there is also T-5 5-speed bellhousing in the works and it's a very nice piece. -james |

I'd need to see a couple of very credible documents before I'd believe that assertion. There is some parasitic power consumption associated with automatics (e.g., to drive the pump), but I seriously doubt it's anywhere near 2x-3x the parasitic losses in a manual trans.

Most comparisons I have seen rate the stick at 1-3 more MPG in an identical car. |

I quite agree. But I don't have a 4-speed. I have a noisy 3-speed stick I'd like to replace. Having been a hard core stick user since I drove an old Farmall Regular tractor when I was 12 (at least a decade ago?), I'm almost ready to let someone else do the shifting for me. And the thought occurred to me as a long shot that there might be an auto that could be worth having.But I haven't traveled very far past the end of my nose in a long time and if I'm gonna fix that I'd probably better stick with stick as you say. Just a wild flight of delirium. I'd dance a jig to have an A-833 OD in there right now. I have to do a lot of research and ask a lot of questions, because like many people I have to get it right and spend it once. I've heard about a shop converting some other bells to something. Is that what you're talking about? But I don't seem to be smart enough to even find any T5's around. If I knew exactly which cars to look in I could probably find several. But guys around here seem to think I've lost my mind if I ask about T5. Maybe if I could say, "That thing attached to the back of the engines of . . ." I think local yard guys are getting either too young to know or too old to care anymore.-james Thanks |
