Post subject:  Slant Six Waterpump with plastic impeller

I have a 1966 Plymouth Belvedere II and want to replace my waterpump.
The waterpumps at my local auto parts stores do not fit. The pump that came off the car has a plastic impeller that is concave in the center. The new pumps have metal impellers and they hit the block and bind up.

Any help would be appreciated, Skipjaz

Wow, that's really interesting that the pumps you're buying are hitting the block. Sounds like your parts store has got a run of improperly-assembled ones. The plastic (or cast iron) impellers were used through about '67, stamped metal after that, stamped metal supplied as service replacements for all slant-6s, and the two types are fully interchangeable, unless you're dealing with improperly-made pumps.

Suggest you try a different pump supplier, make certain there's no crusty buildup on the block that's preventing you installing the pump, and make sure you're using the correct "gasket sandwich" (block-gasket-plate-gasket-pump) when installing the pump.
