| Post subject: | I want to eliminate the computer |
This is about the 4th post I've made. 1985 Dodge D150 Royale with a slant 6 from probably late 70's. I belive that my problem lies in the on board computer. I thank all that have responded to my prior posts and have done everything all have suggested however this engine still does not run properly. Part of the problem is that when they changed over the motors they did not make provisions for the original ignition system so now not everything that was original is hooked up. For example there is no provision for an oxygen sensor anywhere, the egr valve is gone as is the smog pump. What I would like to do is totally eliminate the computer and run the motor like it was 1963. A straight up 6 cylinder motor with distributor coil and no computer. I'm sure it can be done but am not sure how to go about it. I don't have to worry about emissions where I am so that doesn't matter. Just looking to get this thing running properly. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance |

Well, you will have to rerplace the ignition system and the feedback carburetor. The easiest ignition system swap is the HEI swap. Do a search on this site to find lots of info and "how-to" posts. For a carb you can stick with a one-barrel (I recommend the Holley 1920) or go more exotic with two or more barrels. Easiest and cheapest would be a one barrel swap. |

Sounds like they hodge-podged with alot of rather necessary components from getting a decent idle standpoint goes. It appears that your decision to bypast the computer is the only feasible route you can take now and the least frustrating. Just out of curiousity before you get to far, how exactly does the van behave for you now? starting difficulty, stalling, smoking etc. and is the charchol canister also disconnected? You would be good to take a once over all systems from the back to front and make a list of what else is missing. |
