| Post subject: | Fuel Sending Unit and Fuel Strainer |
I recently removed my fuel tank and removed the pick-up/sending unit. There was no float on the sending unit wire and there was no screen on the fuel pick-up tube. Does anyone know where I could get these items?. BTW, you wouldn't believe the brown muddy mess that came out of that tank, followed by a pile of rusty looking flakes. No wonder it stopped pumping fuel. |

I think we all agreed a week back that Spectra 69 from your local auto parts store or Rock Auto can get you a whole new sending unit, you will need to "test" the fuel level sender first (the one in the '67 reads empty @ 6 gals left....LOL), also I pitched the plastic float for a brass one off the previous unit.... Not bad for $70... -D.Idiot |

The spectra units come with ring, seal, float and strainer. The dealer ones come with ring seat and strainer only. If your sender reads well, I mean the gas gauge functions properly, then I would just buy a float and strainer seperatey. Theres a ford part # floating around you can order from dealer, and for the strainer you can go to a local auto parts store and use an airtex unit from modern efi pump. Otherwise the various mopar stores online can get you what you need - try jimsautoparts and yearone. DI - 6 gallons left reads empty isn't bad. The ones I went through - 6 gallons used - 10 gallons left, read empty. |

Got the float today from Ford - in stock - $12 and change. The strainer was ordered today from the local Chevy dealer. Will be in tomorrow afternoon - $17.04 + tax. Thanks /6 Dan and to all. |

I installed my strainer and float and then checked the variable resistor and found it was intermittent in operation. I messed with it WAY too long but finally got it operational. Had to bend the tabs and remove the protective cover. Looks like the "wiper" had a riveted contact on it at one time. Not sure. I cleaned the resistance wire with simple green. You wouldn't believe the yellow crap that came off of it and how shiny the wire was when clean. I finally got the "wiper bent where it was pretty consistent with a variation of 10 - 80 ohms. Still no working fuel gauge. Kept searching on this site for info. Figured the antique voltage regulator (in the fuel gauge) was working since the temp. gauge works. Finally was pointed to the "allpar" site where I saw the picture of the sending unit with a GROUND wire attached. I knew it had to have ground but figured it must be through the sending unit, tank, and tank strap. NOT. No ground wire on my car. Clipped a separate ground from the sending unit fuel line to the chassis and Eureka! I've got a fuel gauge. Soldered a 12 gauge stranded wire to a small hose clamp connected to the fuel line on the sending unit and hooked the other side to a bolt that holds the rear snubber on the frame. Now I'll have to check for accuracy as the tank uses fuel. I imagine bending the rod will dial it in. FYI. |

Good day Pierre. Do you have a part number for that fuel sender strainer? It would be great to find it locally. Anyone know if the rubber seal can be found locally for the fuel sender? Thanks-Dart68 |

Go to a GM dealer and ask them for the part # Dan mentions in his post.... strainers aren't availible from chrysler any more. The seal part # is chrysler 1948757 I don't know if this is availble dealer or not. Try napa... otherwise you can mailorder it from jimsautoparts.com |
