Post subject:  Nitrous jetting, and misc ?s

I am running an NOS sniper kit on my slant, and was wondering what jetting to use for a 100 hp. shot. I am assuming that the jettings listed in the owners manual are for a V8 (ex. 47/53 for 100), not a small six. I am running 42/47 now. Also, is anyone having problems with blowing head gaskets between cyl 3 and 4? Are better head gaskets availbale. I phoned FelPro and they only offer the one. My slant build is as follows:

offy manifold
erson .465 solid cam
390 holley
cyl. head shaved .100", ported, stock valves w/3 angle valve job
arp rod bolts
clifford headers
std. sealed power pistons, flipped around
chrome moly rings
HEI ignition, accell superstock coil

Also which NGK plugs should I use with the revised head with around 9.5:1 compression (1983 motor)? B9ES?

Can't help you with the jetting, as I run a fogger. At the present time I have #22 jets all around. I have run as large as #26 jets. You should not have a head gasket problem, if the head and block are flat, unless your getting into detonation. I run the B9ES plug in the drool tube head.

Jetting is basically the same for any size engine.

If you are blowing head gaskets at that little of a shot you are probably into detonation. How much total timing are you running? What is your fuel pressure, and what octane are you spraying on?

I regularly spray 150 with an 11-1 motor, 25* timing, 6.5 fuel pressure, and at least 100 octane fuel. :shock:

Is the Sniper that setup that goes in the top of the air cleaner?

I have 9.5:1 comp, 28 degrees of timing and am running 94 octane fuel @ 6-6.5. I am pretty sure I am not getting detonation but am not ruling that out. I ate piston number 5 a couple days ago, it looks like when I spray, the cyl. head "walks" around a bit. When cyl 6 fires, 5 is on intake stroke :? (I think I figured that out right) thus backpressuring cyl.5 and leaning it out. I ordered the ARP head stud kit and sent my head in to be pressure tested and checked for warpage. The Sniper is a spray plate system, your thinking of the sneeky pete. I was also wondering about carb spacers. I am running a 1" 4 hole on top of the plate. should the spray plate be underneath the carb and not the spacer, or does it not matter?

Either you are in detonation or you are way too rich on fuel. Rich will kill pistons too.

I was told to keep my plate right under the carb, on top of the spacers.

I sprayed 100 through a 4 hole plate on an Offy 4 hole intake. It did not hurt anything.

What fuel pump and regulator do you have? Is it holding 6.5 all the way through the run?

Is your vacuum advance unhooked? It can pull a ton of timing in when you need it least.

What ET does the car run on and off the sauce?

Sorry for the game of 20 questions, but you are not spraying near enough juice to be killing pistons and head gaskets. :shock:

I've used nitrous on other projects and one accessory I find useful is the Jacobs Nitrous Master Mind controller. It's about $225 from Summit. More than the feature of adjustable pulsed solenoid control that helps maintain traction, are the safety features. It has a low fuel pressure nitrous cut-off switch, adjustable timing retard up to 15 degrees, and a built in adjustable rev limiter. It's saved my engine more than once (forgot to turn on the NOS fuel pump, etc).

Summit shows it as being for 4 and 8 cylinders. I'm assuming it can be a dapted to a 6 also? :shock:

My Spark plugs are a nice tan color, so I'm not too rich. I made 2 passes with the can on, and then unplugged it for my last 4 passes. My fuel pump is an electric carter P4594 6-8 psi @72gph which is about exactly what my kit calls for. Pressure gauge "flickers" down to 6 when I hit the button, but immediatley comes back to 6.5 and stays there. My block has never had the deck checked for striaghtness, so that might be where my head gasket problem lies. Unfortunately I live in a small town in MB. Canada so I can't really give you guys E.Ts. Our car club puts on drag races at our airport every year. We have a tree and all of the equipment (RaceAmerica), but there is always something stupid with sensors or wiring connectors, just to screw me over. We just had our test and tune last weekend, and I was playing with juice for the first time. My motor is in a lowered 84 1/2 ton long box. Its backed by a shift kitted lock up 727, and a sure gripped 8.25 with 4.56 gears, churning 29.5x11.5 MTs :twisted: (yeah, a bit overkill,but the price was right). I beat a '71 RR with a 383 and an automatic on my last run while melting piston 5 :D
