Post subject:  Aluminum Block With Late Model Cylinder Head

"When the holes are pointed toward the passenger side, more oil gets onto the cam. Seeing that the Aluminum Block has an open lifter bore area, the Chrysler engineers felt that the cam would get enough oil from the top / rocker shaft so the Aluminum Block's squirt hole placement has always pointed to the driver’s side of the engine."

I went back and read Doug Dutra's Aluminum /6 Overview today. The above is quoted from that article and he is speaking of the connecting rod oil squirt holes. Now I wonder - Since I used a 1980 cylinder head (hardened exhaust valve seats) with the CLOSED lifter bore areas (just holes for the pushrods) - am I starving my lifters for oil? Guess I'll be the test case. The other disadvantage I see is that a cam & lifter swap will now involve removing the head which includes replacing the $150.00 copper head gasket.

Thoughts?

The "open lifter area" allows more splash oil from the crank to get on the lifters. Fact is that I have run cast iron block slants with the con rod squirt hole facing the driver's side of the engine, this gets more oil on the pistons and cylinder walls. (helps piston cooling, but the engine seems to use more oil)

The cast crank con rods have a more center oil squirt hole, a "split the difference" position.
I would not worry about it, it is more important to use a good quality oil, keep the level up and keep the oil clean.
