Very often I see eBay carb auctions with some sort of R- number proudly displayed. I have found it almost impossible to find actually carb information based on any of these R- numbers. Is there some place I'm missing that has lots of them available for look-up and referencing?

And if you're ever looking to find a rebuild kit, the R-number (technically a "list number") is the only way to be sure you are getting the correct one.

I guess it's a good thing I can ask for a Vega kit. After about 2 hours on the internet I found an "official" number list put put by Holley. (At least it was on holley.com.) My R- number wasn't on it. I think I've found one R- number out of all the ones I've looked for.

Also, the other number, the one most people recognize, the one listed on eBay, doesn't match up with any R- number even close. (5210 on the auction, R-6477 on the carb)

I suspect's it's like a lot of other companies. They remove old numbers - apparently because if they leave them in the book the carburetor's spirit will haunt the Holley chief executive until captured by ghost busters - - or something.

5210 isn't a list number; think of it more like a number that describes the family it's part of. The list number describes the carb exactly. Another issue is that many times, each casting will also have an R-number stamped into it that is actually a casting or part number. (I.e. the throttle body, main body, metering blocks, and bowls will each have a different Rxxxx number stamped into it, all of which are different from the list number, which also appears in the form Rxxx.)

I've found searching the internet for carb numbers to be bordering on useless, but I have been able to find a rebuild kit listed for the large majority in either the Walker or Borg Warner carb-kit catalogs. As far as figuring out what they came off to begin with, I couldn't tell you if a Holander does it or not.

Ross...

5200,5210 is the Model Number (like the four barrel buys decide whether a 4150 or a 4160 is going to give them the secondary tuneablilty vs. cheap price on the carb....or a 2300 straight two barrel vs. the 2305 staged two barrel)...

On the fuel bowl (usually) is an R-"" number that should be the number for the carb... (like R-6162A is a Holley Model 2210 two barrel for a Chrysler Big Block)

Carb # (or sometimes referred to as Carb "R"eplacement part number) 6477 was listed for the 1973 Chevy Vega (as well as possibly R6478,R6580,R6581), Starting in 1974 Chevy part numbers replaced the Holley numbers

So like in 1977 a Pontiac Astre/Sunbird might have a Holley 5210 mounted on it with the GM part number 458102 or so...

We're definitely not going to fight over that comment!!

I assume those books cost a whole lot more money than it costs to print them. That means they will be listed on the internet!

I suppose the greatest advantage of knowing that is so you can go to AutoZone or something. After all the comments about Walmart grade parts houses quality, I'm not sure I'd even want their kits.

Thanks.

Thanks

Did you find that in a book or is there a downloadable source I've missed.

That one shows up in the Chilton 1972-1979 Auto Repair Manual...it can also be cross referenced in the Hollander 1965-1979 manual also...
