Post subject:  Is a BBD legal for my 225 on my 83 B150 in silicon valley?

Our family has had 170,198s and 225s over the past 40 years. My first car in 1969 was a 170 3speed valiant which i converted to an aluminum 225 4 sppeed and disc brakes and sway bars and michelins for running around hiway 9 in the santa cruz mountains. I currently have a b150 van I dearly love for about 15 years..I have had to buy a replacement holley 1945 to get it past smog for the last 6 of 2 year smog test cycles and am getting sick of it.The vehicle is a 49 state fed version, with no solonoid in the carb body. Can I buy a junk yard 2 barrel carb Carter BBD and iron :D manifold with a fresh carb and still be legal for here in silicon valley , I hate the pourous welded aluminum manifold also.I am starting to see a lot of the 2 barrel BBD setups with iron intake at the pick and pulls and would like to make the switch if it will pass smog.It has been costing me almost $200 bucks every two years at Kragen to replace the funky holley1945 and I am disabled .I looked at the ARB EO thing but can't seem to determine if this is kosher with them .Also my last two engines that I have built have hydraulic lifters and some mornings I have to turn the engine off momentarily to let one or more lifters fill as they click upon start up after i drive one block or so. Anytips would be sincerely appreciated,I love my slant sixes!

Strictly speaking, no, a 2bbl isn't smog-legal on your '83 because '82 was (officially) the last year for 225-2bbls in trucks. Will you get away with it...? That depends on how eagle-eyed your smog tech is, how clean/stock-appearing you make the installation (if it looks hacked, you're sunk), and how good you are at playing dumb when asked about it!

Thank you for that info sir! I think it will be a one barrel holley for now as I went through hell this last time to get it through.I will look for a pre 75 van and build a killer slant six with a small afb down the road.Incidently ,the real smog hassle this time ended up being a leaking vacuum amplifier which the state paid for a smog shop that glued it up with a bunch of orange siiclone sealer.I thought the EGR had sufficiant travel but it really moves now that it is fixed and passed. Thanks again Sir!
