I've never serviced a Ball and trunion type joint on a driveshaft. do they ware out like U joints? are they hard to replace and get parts for?

They are U-joints, just a different type than the cross-and-roller type you're used to seeing. They can and do wear out, just like other U-joints. The boot needs to be inspected periodically; if it's torn, replace it. If you get a shudder on acceleration (particularly as you cross up through 10-20-30 mph accelerating from a stop) that can indicate a worn B&T front U-joint. Complete rebuild packages and new boots are available from Andy Bernbaum (his catalogue goes up to '62, but the A-body B&T U-joints and parts are the same through 1965, so the items listed for 1960-'62 Valiant and Lancer are the ones to pick.)

There is also a conversion process that bolts a splined shaft to the output flange of the transmission and shortens and puts a new nose on your driveshaft, with a cross-and-roller U-joint and slipyoke. This is worth considering if the B&T joint is completely trashed and would require a new housing to refurbish it, or if for some other reason you will require a custom-made driveshaft. But it is usually more economical to fix the B&T joint if it requires minor or moderate repair.

When in good repair, B&T joints work well.

thanks for the info dan. I dont have any shuddering. I just want to replace any questionable week spots before they becaome a problem. I'm sure they've never been changed or serviced

Definitely no inherently weak spot here. Check the boot; if it's torn, regrease the joint and install a new boot and you'll be all set.

Definitely not as the ball & trunnion was used behind big blocks and hemi's in 64/65

what about the rear u joint? I'm trying to put together a list of things I should change when I tear apart the rear suspension. rear axle is definetly getting a pinion seal. and then I'll inspect the gears. not making any noise so I'll leave the bearings alone. trying to plan ahead

It's just a standard U-joint. The first place I called had it in stock.
