Post subject:  apology and maybe some advice

first off I'd like to apologize to slant six dan..I accidentally totally blew off your question in my oil and additives thread, got side tracked by diesel oil in gas engine...heh.
Quote:
You mention your engine uses some oil. In that case, you may want to use a slightly heavier oil grade to help hold down the consumption. Several factors go into picking the best viscosity for your needs. How much oil does it burn, and how much does it leak, and what viscosity grade are you using now? Where do you live, and what's the weather like this time of year?
if you'd still like to help...

I don't think it leaks any oil at all, a stain has apearappearedhe verryveryt of the car, but that was after I replaced my radiator (still can't get the trans cooler lines to completly stop leaking..>.>).as To how much oil it burns, I ses alot of smoke in the rear view if I punch it really hard, and when I first start it it spits out some oil and sputters just slightly till it kicks out the oil. it uses about a quart/quart anda and a a month I'd say. I'm currently using penzoil 10w-30, but trying to figure out if I want to switch to delo 15w-40 or Rotella T 5w-40 "synthetic". I live in Georgia; summers get around 100 at the hoteshottestwinters usually stay in the low teens (somtisomtimes lower but not usually )

ok well I think that covers it, really sorry again, not usually one to not answer some one

H'mmmm...if you're seeing big clouds of smoke, it sounds like time to plan for engine work (or replacement). Sorry, what was the question again? Can you point me to the old thread?

heheh well I was mostly wondering how bad the smoking thing was...heh...is it critical? would higher grade oil do anything to slow it up?.. it really only smokes under heavy load/ floored

Suggests the rings are rapidly headed in the direction of "shot", or perhaps they might be sticking. Thicker oil will probably slow it somewhat, but won't fix it. How many miles are on this engine?

If your smoking at start up and when you stand on it (my pop's term for getting on it  ) it sounds like your valve stem seals are shot and/or the valve guides are worn out. Had the exact problem with a 383 once and my slant is now just starting to do the same. When I installed my current engine (six years ago) I lapped the valves and noticed the valves where loose in the guides. Still good compression (140 + on all cylinders). Could be you just need some head work, but do a compression test to conferm. Thicker oil, like Dan said, will slow down the symptom some, but not stop it. I use 15W-40 Napa All fleet (Valvoline Diesel oil).

what color is the smoke? if it's black then it's a carb problem. my dart did the same thing with a holley 1920. loved getting on it in front of a mercedes. :)
