Post subject:  1973 Duster

I have a question about the front and rear drums on my 73 duster, from my understanding the rear is one size and the front 9"'-12" I want to put 15x7 all around. What do I need to change?? on my duster (rear end)(hubs) if I need to install front disk breaks what model car would I get the parts off, or would it be easy to just buy the kit. also anyone know how to disconnect the seat belt warning buzzer or where its located.

Thanks

Post subject:  Brand of rims...

If you have the 5x4 SBP drums you are limited in stock and aftermarket rim sizes...(there are companies that can cut down your existing rims and reconstruct them to what ever size and backspacing you need)...this can cost a little (but not as much as buying a new set of SBP Rallyes in 15x7).

5x4.5" lug pattern LBP wheels are easier to get but you will have to change your front spindles and brake setup (plug and play is any 1973-1976 A-body Dart/Valiant/etc...) with front disc brakes...you will also have to change your rear axle to match the new bolt pattern (get one from the donor car...have your mechanic swap the axle shafts and drums from the donor car in your rear axle....etc...).

Hello

When you say change the axle do you mean to pull the whole rear end ??? also what do you mean by (5x4.5" lug pattern LBP) as for the disk breaks I need to pull all the parts off the doner car and the rear drums and axle right I just want to make sure this is a my first project and I just want to do it right the 1st time.

Thanks for your help

To recap....

Find a 1973-1976 Donor A-body (Valiant, Duster, Dart)....pull the rear axle assembly, pull the upper control arms, spindles and disk brake hardware. I would also pull the master cylinder for a core trade in too.

Once this is done, you will need a new set of rims....either the ones from the donor car, or you can buy a nice set of aftermarket ones.

My method, when I did such things, was to get the thing buzzing, then go on an "S & D" - search and destroy mission. Crawl around under the dash or wherever you hear it coming from. Poke around until you find the right box, verify by its vibration, and disconnect a wire to see if that stops the buzz. Now check to make sure removing or disconnecting it didn't stop some other function.

I wouldn't recommend actually destroying the part. Label it and the wiring involved for someone restoring the function in the future - possibly you.

The seat belt buzzer can be disabled by disconnecting the plugs under the seats, if I'm not mistaken. It doesn't actually disconnect the buzzer, it disconnects the sensor that activates the buzzer when someone sits in the seat.

That'll work, too!

BTW, Remember the cars that cut the ignition if the seatbelts were unbuckled? Early 70's imports, IIRC. Not the best safety feature to have.

Actually is was a starter disable if there was weight on the seat and the seat belt was unbuckled. That was 1974 model year for just about everything including my grandparent's '74 Scamp.

I was working at a Phord dealership ( driving a red '69 Dart hardtop ) in the fall of 73 through the spring of 76. When the ignition interlocks first came out people hated them and wanted us to disconnect them. Of course, it was illegal to do that so we just told them that it was against the law to disconnect the harness under the seat. A few didn't get it but most nodded knowingly and took their cars home. What they did after that was none of our concern.
