Post subject:  Distributor spring clip removal?

Are there any hints on the best way to remove the spring clip to get the governor off the shaft of my electronic Distributor?. I'm not have any luck. I can get a hold of it a little with snap ring pliers but can"t get it off.

Thanks,
Rick

Are you talking about the little wire clip that's on the shaft?

It's a pain, I used needle nose pliers.

See this for some other ideas on it.

Yes the little clip down inside. I tried again today for about a half hour and no luck. I need to get this one apart to weld up the governor or else I need another distributor with a governor with less advance. Somewhere around 10 (20 actual) would be good. From what everyones saying the slant likes less than 30 degrees and with our initial at 8-10 we would at about 40 degrees with the 15R that is currently in the distributor. Anyone got one for sale?

Don't worry about bending it, just get some needle nose pliers on it and yank............

A small screwdriver on 1-leg and the needle-nose pliers on the other leg may help by spreading it apart a little

I have taken a bunch of 15R's (about 6) over to my buddy's house and we welded them up. I need to clean them up, and file the slots (they are closer to a 6R now... )

I'm going to finish them as a 9-10R (depends on that last couple thousands).

I may have a couple of them ready by the end of the week...

Rick,
keep a steady downward pull on the shaft as you spread the tangs, one at a time, with a small screwdriver. The downward pull of the shaft will make the groove in the shaft help wedge the clip, keeping it expanded as you work at spreading the tangs.

Thanks, I'll give that a try a little later.

Keep your eyes open for a set of "dental" picks, too. We use them all the time on transmission stuff, and they're great (that you, Tony?) for little clips like that.

I used a small pair of needlenose pliers and had my clip out in a few seconds.

Post subject:  Got it out!

I tried for a while to spread the clip to get it off but there just wasn't enough room. So I took a good pair of small needle nose and gave a steady pull and it came right out. It didn't even bend up the clip much at all. Thanks for all the help.

Some of those clips just say "oh no you don't..."

Glad you have mastered the art of hairpin wrangling!

And other clips say 'see you later' and are never seen again as they fly across the workshop, once released.
