My Duster makes a knocking sound only when it is under 1000 rpm. It does it loudly sometimes, and other times it makes no noise at all. temperature has no effect and it sounds like it is coming from the back of the block, close to the torque convertor. My neighbor said it sounds like a broken torque convertor bolt. What do you guys think? It only does it when the engine is in gear or the A/C is on.

Smart neighbor. Pull the inspection cover and look around the bolts for any cracks/breaks.

if it does a sound like grabbin something from time to time (like beating something with a chain or so) you might have to replace your flexplate. Mine was cracked badly and for time to time it would loose a piece and do a lot of noise ant then go quiet again... till there was more flexplate on the bottom of the trans bellsousing (scrap pieces) than bolted to the crank and TC, then it started to knock permanently like a rod knock... replaced the flexplate and everything returned to normal.

If you drop the tranny and find the flexplate is solid, pull the converter to make sure the hub is in good condition. Just recently had a similar noise as you that appeared to be coming from flexplate but the converter hub snapped in half. Car was still driving, tranny still shifting normally.
