I have successfully transplanted a '72 225 in to an '80 van. I want to fire it up to move it out of the way, but don't know if the points' style distrubutor will incur damamge if I just hook it up to the electoronic ignition leads from the van. I wouldn't think that it would make a difference, but want to make sure.

Eventually I will swap the dizzy for the later electronic ignition dizzy, but I just need to move it across the yard for now.

Thanks guys.

You can't hook up the points-type distributor to the existing electronic-ignition wires (Well, you can, but nothing will happen).

You would need to connect the points distributor's one and only wire to the coil negative terminal. The coil positive would need to get ignition-on voltage via the ballast resistor. Hook it up thus and it'll work (or just swap in the electronic dist from the '80).

Ah! Thanks!

I would put the other distributor in, but it seems like ivery time I swap a dizzy out of a car, I run into a timing nightmare because somehow I didn't have the #1 cyl at TDC or I skipped a tooth when I put the new dizzy in...

I will eventually swap them but for now I just need to start it to move it out of the way of the garage so I can get my '50 Chevy out. :) Woodward Dream Cruise is 2 weeks away and I have some work to do!

Thanks!

It would be a good idea to either unplug the electronic module from the harness when you connect the (-)coil to the points distributor or disconnect and insulate the wire currently going to the (-) coil from the igntion module. Either one would prevent damage to the module.
