Post subject:  Kickdown cable linkage using SU carbs

Hello There,

I've got a project on my hands. I'm to add a set of Twin SU carbs to a Early ALuminium block Slant Six fitted with an automatic transmission. I'm OK with making up linkage from carbs to pedal but I'd sure love to see what others have done to address adapting the kick-down cable set-up to work with the throttle linkage for these carbs.

Those of you down under and else where that own such beasties as I'm conspiring to make here in North America: Please show me what sort of set ups you have.

Many Thanks in Advance

Welcome onboard, Svensk Slanter! Please take a moment to look around and locate your six nearest exits, keeping in mind they may be in a row under the hood of your car.

I'm thinking you would likely be best off to start with the stock early A-body kickdown and throttle linkage, which involves a vertical pullrod coming off the accelerator, pulling a bellcrank counterclockwise (you're sitting in the driver's seat looking forward), which rotates a forward-pointing rod. This forward-pointing rod attaches to the original 1bbl carb and rotates the throttle lever. Immediately in front of the firewall, there is another, double-ear bellcrank attached to the rod. The passenger-side ear of this bellcrank hooks to the throttle return spring, which is vertically orientated (other end attaches to a tab secured to one of the bellhousing bolts). On auto-trans cars, the other ear of this bellcrank has a ball facing rearward. A ball socket joint with threaded ID snaps onto this ball, and another vertical rod threads into the bottom of this ball joint and runs down to another bellcrank, bolted to the transition "corner" area where the firewall becomes the floorpan. Then another rod runs rearward from the other ear of that bellcrank, aft to the transmission.

Seems to me you could keep the factory kickdown completely intact and unmolested, make a new forward-running throttle rod to clamp into the 1st bellcrank mentioned in this post, and work from there to interface with the carbs.

Like you, I am very curious to learn what other members, particularly in OZ, have come up with for SU throttle linkages. You will likely get more responses if you post this in the relevant forum at MoparMarket Forums in Australia (you'll have to sign up).
