A spool technically requires custom alloy axles to be NHRA legal. If you ever want to drive this car on the street I would discourage you from running a spool or a locker. Heck, I wouldn't even use an 8 1/4 for a drag project, but that's mostly due to my stock of 8 3/4 third memebrs and dislike of C-clips. Is it safe to assume you already own the 8 1/4? |

Oh of course I already own it. 8.75 rears are hard to come by around here and due to the fact that I just cant swing the pricing for one- but maybe I'll have to bite the bullet and go with an 8 3/4. 8.25 sg=$300/ 8.75 sg =500+ what to do... |

Well, if you already own the 8 1/4 then buy the Sure-Grip and the gears you need and build it. If you really wanted or needed a spool you'd end up buying axles too and that would eat up the budget. I have a C-body 8 3/4 housing and a pair of pickup axles to have cut down for my Dart. I also have several 3rd members, two with the early type Sure-Grip. So my choice is pretty easy. |

I do happen to have a 741 casting center chunk but I cant seem to get or find a low gear set for it . I need 4.56's. I guess the 489 is the way to go... |

I went with a detroit locker. Got it from randy's Ring and pinion. www.ringpinion.com I drive the car on the street and I race it a bunch too. No clutch packs to service and no cones to bottom out. Greg |

Spend the money to get into an 8 3/4.8.75 sg =500+ what to do... Stronger, parts are more common and easy gear changes are the first 3 good reasons to go with the 8 3/4. Sell the 8 1/4 to help fund the 8 3/4 project. As for a spool, don't even think about running one on the street. DD |
