Need some help.

I am gearing up to reinstall my 904 tranny with my newly rebuilt 225 (bored .060 over, tell you how that goes in another post though) and I am having a hard time finding an elusive part for my 904.

It is a sensor/switch that threads into the transmission and comes into contact with the levers on the inside of the tranny where the shifting occurs. I was under the impression it was my "neutral safety starter switch", but I have some doubts. After searching with the guy through 3 different books at the parts store, almost all neutral safety switches are column mounted, so do I have it wrong? Mine had only one prong on it by the way and one wire connected to it.
Then I started thinking it could be my backup light switch. but I left my manual at my dad's house with the car (30 miles away) so i will have to double check tonight or tomorrow.

What is it though? threads into the tranny, single prong, what the heck?

and if it is either or, where can I get another one.?

The neutral safety switch/backup light switch are supposed to be combined as far as i know. I just looked at the haynes manual, and it's showing 3 prongs. Don't know if that helps you or not.

What year is the trans? the early trans with a single wire is a neutral safety switch. The later trans with the 3 wire switch is neutral safety and backup lite switch. Also there are two different single wire switches, depending on the year of the trans. If you can't find the switch locally, Pat Blaise has them.

As far as I know the trans is original, but it might not be, just as easily. It IS a single prong unit, that has a plastic piece that is spring loaded on the transmission side (the side that threads into the tranny).

I am having a hell of a time locating them, the ones they showed in the book at the parts store is the 3-prong type, not what I need.

if I just install it the old one and dont have a wire running to it (the old prong is half-way broken and i cant remove it, it is rusted in place) will my car start or not?

The single prong type that was on there has the circular prong that is thread that you slide the wire over and tighten a nut down onto it.

Yep, '66 used the single-prong switch no longer available from conventional local sources. The 3-prong combination Neutral Safety and reverse lamp switch you can still get locally won't work in your trans; it's for '69-up units. Get a replacement for your '66 from Pat Blais, tflitepatty@verizon.net .

Also don't know if your counter guy you talked to was smoking drugs or just a Chevy-head, but Mopars do not use column-mounted neutral safety switches. The reverse lamp switches on pre-69 Mopars are shifter-mounted (on the column with column shift, in the console with console shift, behind the Reverse button with pushbutton shift), but never any column-mounted Neutral Safety switches.
