Post subject:  timing chain cover seal number question

Hi folks,

I began replacing seals in my small collection of timing chain covers preparatory to stashing the covers, only to find that the seal in the Felpro sets (of gasket and seal) use a seal like an axle seal, not the flanged seal I have used for years and am now removing from timing chain covers.

Well, the new round seal may go in just fine, but it lacks the rubber face that contacts the front of the cover, and it lacks the flange that presses against the inside of the cover and whose fit you measure with a feeler gage.

Does anyone have the part number and source of the good old seal, or is it really ok to use the new seals from the package? No numbers on any of the seals I pulled from covers, naturally.

Thanks

The old flange-type seal was superseded by the new ring-type seal for 1974, and the new type works just fine as long as you install it right way round. Go ahead and use it.

Post subject:  Thank you very much Dan!

Dan,

Thanks very much!! I will go full speed ahead now...amazing the things I feel the need to check on this forum....things I never even thought about before in my classic "ignorance is bliss" mechanic-ing! I couldn't imagine Fel Pro putting the wrong seal in a kit for too long, but it sure looks wimpy in contrast to the older ones. Course, I was focused on appearance as well as just the shaft contact..

Best wishes,

Take a careful look at the shank of the vibration damper and see if there's a groove worn in it. If so, you can get a repair sleeve.
