I got one of those electric choke conversion kits from Randy Rymal. I have a Carter BBD. It seems that a likely spot to mount the heat sensor is either the bolt hole on top of the head where you would insert bolt to pull the engine, or the other bolt hole on the head toward the firewall that currently has a ground strap. I was curious where others have mounted theirs, or If anybody has some advice on the best location.

You're on the right track. I would start out by trying the "engine pulling bolt" location atop the head. Make sure to clean up the pad/boss around the bolt hole so the sensor gets a good ground.
