Have 1983 Dodge 150. After driving 20 miles what appears to be valve clatter develops. It never happens at low speed around town-only on the highway. Sometimes but not always it will dissapear if its shut off and then restarted. Please help its my baby!!!! James |

That '83 engine has hydraulic lifters which are fed their oil via a circuitous and lengthy path. It is probable that a careful engine cleanout will clean things up enough to restore proper oil flow to the lifters. |

Could be that it's an exhaust leak. A leak can sound like a valve or lifter tap. Use a peice of hose like a stethoscope to locate the tapping noise. A lifter will be more noticeable on the right side of the motor, a few inches below the head. A exh leak can be anywhere around the exh. |
