I want to cut my rear exhaust manifold and weld it off. Can this be done with gas? What type of filler rod should be used on cast. What type of material should the plate be? Just mild steel or cast material?
I ve done alot of welding on many different types of metal, just not cast in the last 10 yrs.

you can use some 1/8" mild steel plate and braze it up. that what was used on my split manifold and gave no trouble for 2 1/2 years as a daily driver.

Brazing is relitivly a low heat process compaired to welding. I would think it would melt if the engine was under high load for an extended period. (climbing a long grade) I ve seem manifolds glow a dull red and night.

I've seen brazing hold on cracked manifolds. I don't see any problems unless the motor is run lean or with late timing.
If you don't feel like it will, then stick weld it with a nickel rod. It would be the most dependable method that I know of.

Brazing rod melts between 1600-1800 degrees.

Don't know if different rods influences where in that range it melts; but that is the temp range I found when I was researching it.

For what it's worth, the exhaust components on the turbo 4 FWD motors was rated to 1650 degrees, so I suspect an NA motor wouldn't see anything close to that.

i cut and welded mine with a piece of old leaf spring. used a torch to get the temper out of the spring so i could actually cut the dam thing and make it fit just inside the manifold. my grandfather has a welding rod that is supposed to be just for welding cast iron and steel made by a company called eutectic and we did not even have to preheat the manifold just v'ed- out the steel and the cast and welded them straight together
